Rusty Sermon Romans 1:16 I Am Not Ashamed of the Gospel.

Fatal disease………………..Sin

Sin has many consequences with the ultimate consequence………...Death

Everybody eventually dies……………...Death is universal

Hebrews 9:27 (NASB)
27  And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes
judgment,

Psalm 89:48 (NASB)
48  What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power
of Sheol? Selah.

If there is a cure for the 2nd death, should we not hear about it?

Revelation 20:14-15 (ESV)
14  Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second
death, the lake of fire.15  And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book
of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The one who provided the cure for our sin and death condition did so at the cost
of His own life.

Isaiah 53:4-6 (ESV)
4  Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him
stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
5  But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we
are healed.
6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
21  For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the
righteousness of God in Him.

Isaiah 53:9-11 (NLT2)
9  He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like
a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave.
10  But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when
his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy
a long life, and the LORD’s good plan will prosper in his hands.
11  When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And
because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many
to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.

Psalm 16:9-10 (ESV)
9  Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells
secure.
10  For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.

The GOSPEL

1 Corinthians 15:1-8 (ESV)
1  Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you
received, in which you stand,
2  and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to
you—unless you believed in vain.
3  For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ
died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
4  that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the
Scriptures,
5  and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
6  Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of
whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
7  Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
8  Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

The Book of Romans

John 3:16 (ESV)
16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 1:16-17 (NIV)
16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings
salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
17  For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that
is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

Book of Romans……. A personal letter from the Apostle Paul to a group of
believers in Rome.

A Proclamation
An Explanation
A Clarification of the gospel.

Are you ashamed of the gospel?

A list of  reasons some might be closed lipped to share the gospel.

The gospel is connected to the cross.
The prospect of somebody dying on a bloody cross makes you
uncomfortable?
Cross was a symbol of shame
                Like an electric chair

The gospel is something done for us when we like to do for ourselves.
(I can handle my own salvation myself)

The gospel Offensive

Galatians 5:11 (NIV)
Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still
being  persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.

Most people in the world don’t believe the gospel. You will end up being in a
minority viewpoint.

 Matthew 7:13-14 (NKJV

"Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads
to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.  Because narrow is the gate
and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

The gospel is not “with it”

Quality of life costs
You have to repent
No fun

Social outcast, a loser, a reject, no longer popular
Bible thumper

Might offend others

Might suffer economic persecution.

Can’t buy or sell, loss of job or business

You could be tortured, imprisoned, or killed.

Still yet Paul was not ashamed of the gospel and neither should we.

Philippians 3:7-8 (NKJV)
7  But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.
8  Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge
of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and
count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ

Luke 9:26 (ESV)
26  For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man
be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the
holy angels.

 2 Timothy 1:8 (NASB)
8  Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His
prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power
of God,

Galatians 6:14 (ESV)
14  But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

The question………………...how do we get there?

How do we get to the point where we can’t shut up about the gospel?

Romans 1:16 (ESV)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to
everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  1. There is power in the message of the gospel itself.
  2. There is power in the after effects of the gospel.

There is spiritual power is released in the death, burial and resurrection of
Christ.

The modern church doctrinal “food fight’ has been elevated over the gospel.

The secondary issues drown out the gospel and people don’t get to hear the
gospel.

DO WE AGREE ABOUT THE GOSPEL !!!!

Are we proclaiming the clarity of the gospel of Jesus Christ?

No Add-ons to the gospel.
No Full Gospel
No health and wealth Gospel
No liberation Gospel
One gospel for all people.

Jesus died, buried and raised………………..period.

Some hesitant to share because we don’t feel qualified

90% of Christians have never led anybody for Christ.

Undercover secret service Christians.

Get to the point……...get to the gospel

1 Corinthians 2:1-2 (NKJV)
1  And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech
or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God.
2  For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and
Him crucified.

You say to your friend: Jesus Christ loves you and died for you so you can have
life eternal.

He died on a cross, was buried in a tomb and was raised on the 3rd day paying
the price for your sin.

This is like dropping  NUKE in the life of a person.

Get to the simple, clear, powerful gospel.

Some say they just want to live a good life and let that be an example to others.

"Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."
St. Francis of Assisi
Even if we lead a consistent life and are a good example eventually we have to
share the gospel.
Dunamis = explosive power……..from where we get the word dynamite.

Efficacious…….it works
The gospel has power and it works……………..it changes lives, it deals with our
sin issue.
We were captivated by sin...our sin nature…...sin sick
Ephesians 2:1 (NKJV)
1  And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
Galatians 2:19-20 (ESV)
19  For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20  I have
been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me
and gave himself for me.
We died with Christ, we were buried with Christ and we were raised to New Life
in Christ.
Sin nature need to die.
Isaiah 1:18 (ESV)
18  “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like
scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they
shall become like wool.
Old life is done away with…….New Life begins.
I need TRANSFORMATION

Romans 1:16 (ESV)
16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation
to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
So how do I get into this New Life?
You must BELIEVE
What does it mean to believe?
To trust……...to put your faith in
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
5  Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own
understanding.6  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make
straight your paths.
The big question………….….have you trusted in  and believe the gospel?
