Exodus Chapter 11

1      And the LORD said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. Afterward he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he will surely drive you out of here altogether.2 Speak now in the hearing of the people, and let every man ask from his neighbor and every woman from her neighbor, articles of silver and articles of gold.”3 And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.
4      Then Moses said, “Thus says the LORD: ‘About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt;5 and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of
Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the female servant who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the animals.6 Then there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as was not like it before, nor shall be like it again.7 But against none of the children of Israel shall a dog move its tongue, against man or beast, that you may know that the LORD does make a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.’8 And all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me, saying, ‘Get out, and all the people who follow you!’ After that I will go out.” Then he went out from Pharaoh in great anger.

Chapter 11 begins “the Lord said to Moses” is more accurately “the Lord had said to Moses” and then it goes on to reveal what God had told to Moses during the three days of darkness concerning what the final plague would be.
This conversation is a continuation from the previous chapter. “Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”
29  So Moses said, “You have spoken well. I will never see your face again.”
Sometimes these chapter breaks are awkward. Remember hese chapter and verse divisons were not in the original texts. The present chapter divisions in our Bibles were invented in 1205 by Stephen Langton, a professor in Paris (he later became Archbishop of Canterbury), who put these into a Vulgate edition of the Bible. These chapters were divided into verses by Robert Stephanus, a Parisian book printer, about 300 years later. His versification of the Bible has prevailed to the present. He divided the bible into verses while riding on horseback from Paris to Lyons consequently the quality of his work was not the best. These chapter and verse breaks and number are not inspired. The scripture is inspired “God breathed”. The paper, the ink, the translation is not inspired. KJV only?

 1. “ask from his neighbor and every woman from her neighbor, articles of silver and articles of gold.” Why would the Hebrews have the boldness to ask the Egyptians for their jewelry? And why would they give it to them?

Exodus 3:21-22 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed.22 But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, namely, of her who dwells near her house, articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians.”

Reguire back pay…… Number 2:32 These are the ones who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses. All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
70 to 603,050 men over the age of 20 in 400 years. 301,525*8hrs per day* 365 days per year*400 years*$8.50 min wage. = 29 billion, 935 million, 402 thousand dollars
With interest of 3% over 400 years = 351 trillion, 288 billion, 499 million, 451 thousand,454 dollars and 93 cents……not counting overtime, holiday pay or health care.
That’s why the Hebrews could say “give me that damn Rolex”.

 2.  Who is going out into the midst of Egypt to kill the firstborn of Egypt.

The LORD, Yahweh, I AM who I AM, he who was in the burning bush will personally kill the firstborn, male, female, and animals. I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. Exodus 12:12

The LORD brings destruction on the unrighteous. He destroyed Sodom and Gohmarah.

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself.13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.. Rev 19:11-16

 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God;
6 For I am the LORD, I change not; Mal 3:6
.
 3. Why would God single out only the “firstborn” of Egypt to die?

This is the ultimate disaster, since all the plans and dreams of a father were bound up in his firstborn son, who received a double share of the family estate when the father died
11:5 the firstborn. The firstborn held a particularly important position in the family and society, not only inheriting a double portion of the father’s estate, but also representing special qualities of life and strength (cf. Ge 49:3). In Egypt, the firstborn would ascend to the throne and continue the dynasty. Whatever significance might have been attached religiously, politically, dynastically, and socially, it was all stripped away by the extent and intensity of the plague—namely the execution of all the firstborn of all classes of the population including their animals.
This was the death of all the first-born in Egypt at once, which had been first threatened (ch. 4:23, I will slay thy son, thy first-born), but is last executed; less judgments were tried, which, if they had done the work would have prevented this.
Moses is viewed as a type of Christ, a type being a representation of someone to follow in the future to a greater extent. So what ever characteristics were evident in the life of Moses where more so in the life of Christ.
Verse 3  Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.
Verse 8  And all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me,

Phil. 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
.
 4. “that you may know that the LORD does make a difference between the Egyptians and Israel” on the night of the Passover, what did the Lord see as the difference between the Egyptians and Israel?
The blood.       12:12-13  For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night……. I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.13 ……………… and when I see the blood, I will pass over you,

He is going to show that there is a difference between the children of Israel and the Egyptians. The difference did not lie in the death angel which passed over both the lands of Egypt and Goshen. It did not lie in the fact that one race was Jew and one was Gentile. The difference lay in the blood of the lamb put upon the doorpost. Each home protected by the blood would not be touched by the death angel.
.
 5. What did Israel do to deserve the right to be passed over by death?
Nothing…..Duet. 7:6-8         “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.7 The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples;8 but because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.  Total grace.
.
 6. When the Lord looks at us what does He see as the difference between us who are saved and those who are perishing?
Heb. 9:12 with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
1 Corinthians 5:7 For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
.
 7. What have we done to deserve the right to be passed over by eternal death?
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,9 not of works, lest anyone should boast

Ephesians 1:4-5  He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself,
.
 8.  What does it mean…7 But against none of the children of Israel shall a dog move its tongue?
After the death of the firstborn there could have been a
great backlash against the Hebrews, but God will supernaturally prevent this.
.
 9. “Then he went out from Pharaoh in great anger.” Why would Moses be so angry?
Ezekiel 18 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord GOD. “Therefore turn and live!

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Jonah 3:5-10 “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
5      So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish? 10    Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.

But the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not heed you, so that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”10 So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; and the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land.
 .
10. Did God spare the firstborn of the Pharaoh?
29    And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon;

God is an equal opportunity destroyer.
